Adding a Second Driver to an Exotic Rental: Questions to Ask Before Pickup
If you and a companion want to share an exotic rental, tell LVC before booking. Each intended driver needs to complete the required approval steps, and the insurance needs to be checked for the person who will be behind the wheel. Arrange this before pickup rather than deciding to swap drivers during the outing.
Ask LVC which documents the second driver needs, whether both people must attend pickup, and how the additional driver will be recorded in the agreement. A valid license, a family relationship, or payment of a fee does not by itself complete the process.
This guide explains what to ask about documents, insurance, fees, and pickup arrangements. Until LVC has completed the required steps for the additional driver, that person should remain a passenger.
Tell LVC who will rent, pay, and drive
Tell LVC who is making the reservation, who will present the required card, and who wants permission to drive. These may be different people, but the office needs to review the actual arrangement. Do not assume that paying for the rental, sitting in the car, or holding the keys makes a person an approved driver.
For example, explain that one person will be the primary renter and both want to drive during the booking. Ask what each person needs to complete and how their names should appear in the agreement. Giving the office that information makes the request easier to assess.
A spouse or partner still needs a clear answer
Do not transfer a spouse rule from a different rental company to LVC. Tell the office about the relationship and ask how it affects the additional-driver process, documents, and fees. Ask the insurer about the proposed driver separately rather than assuming a household policy settles the rental permission.
For a group outing, identify the intended drivers before people make plans around different cars. A participant who is approved for one booking should not assume permission to drive every vehicle in the group.
Prepare documents for both drivers
LVC's published requirements include a valid physical license and an age requirement of 25 or older. Ask the office which records it needs for each proposed driver and which originals must be shown at pickup.
Check the current license and the name the person will use in the booking. If the document is being renewed, is in a different language, or differs from another identity record, explain that early. Ask which supporting evidence is required instead of arriving with an assumption.
Make clear which documents belong to each person
When providing documents, make it clear which records belong to the renter and which belong to the second driver. Ask whether the office wants a separate insurer explanation or other evidence for either person. Avoid sending a collection of attachments without explaining the proposed driving arrangement.
Use the document-transfer method confirmed by LVC. Keep license and insurance records out of public comments or group chats that include people unrelated to the booking. Ask what needs to remain visible for the review before altering a copy.
Explain differences between the drivers’ documents
If one person holds a foreign license or lives outside the United States, include that information in the first inquiry. Do not assume the other driver's documents cover both people. Ask LVC to confirm the requirements for the actual combination of licenses, residence, policy evidence, and vehicle.
Likewise, if the proposed driver appears on a family policy, ask the insurer how that person is identified and which record explains the coverage. A policy summary may not display every detail needed to answer a rental-specific question.
Check rental permission and insurance separately
LVC determines what it accepts for the rental. The applicable insurer determines what the policy covers under its terms. Ask both questions, naming the exact vehicle, dates, and intended drivers. A written rental approval should not be treated as a promise from an insurer, and an insurer reply does not complete LVC's agreement process.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners distinguishes the declarations summary from policy wording containing conditions and exclusions. Use the summary to identify the relevant policy, then ask for the provisions or written explanation that address the second driver.
Ask the insurer about the second driver by name
Give the insurer the proposed driver's name and relationship to the renter, along with the rental details. Ask what applies while that person operates the selected car. Keep liability and physical-damage questions separate, and ask about any applicable limits, deductibles, exclusions, or conditions.
If the second driver has their own policy, ask how that policy applies rather than assuming it combines with the renter's insurance. If the person has liability-only coverage, explain that fact directly. Do not calculate adequate coverage by adding unrelated headline limits from two policies.
Check the driver conditions in any card benefit
A credit-card rental benefit can have its own rules about who may drive and which vehicles qualify. Read the current guide for the exact card and ask the benefits administrator to address the proposed second driver and selected car. Check exclusions, payment conditions, and rental-agreement requirements rather than relying on a general description of rental protection.
Do not buy or change a policy solely because an additional-driver fee is available. Ask the insurer about the proposed evidence, then ask LVC whether it meets the rental requirements. If an important coverage or acceptance question remains unanswered, do not let the additional person drive.
Ask who needs to attend pickup
Ask LVC whether both the renter and proposed additional driver must be present and what happens if they arrive at different times. A document sent in advance is not proof that in-person checks can be skipped. Obtain the procedure for this booking before arranging separate arrivals.
If the second driver cannot attend the original pickup, describe the situation accurately. Ask whether there is an approved way to add that person later, where it would happen, and what documents and agreement steps would be needed. Do not substitute remote photographs for a process the office has not accepted.
Allow time for documents and the vehicle walkthrough
Plan travel to the pickup location so document review and the vehicle walkthrough are not rushed. Confirm the appointment and the rental clock, especially for a short booking. If a person is late, ask how that affects the intended arrangement rather than assuming the booking will wait or the return time will move.
Before departure, ask the staff to clarify any outstanding driver question. If one person's review is incomplete, do not interpret the other person's completed paperwork as approval for both. Only the people whose approval is complete should drive.
Confirm collection and return arrangements separately
Permission to drive and permission to collect a booking in someone else's name are different questions. Ask LVC who must be present for collection, whose card is required, and whether the approved second driver may complete the return. A general “additional driver” answer may not cover these handoff responsibilities.
Check the additional-driver fee and agreement
The current LVC FAQ lists a $49 additional-driver fee. Confirm the current total for your booking, how it is calculated, and whether any taxes or other applicable charges affect it. Do not assume the public figure answers whether the charge is per rental, per person, or per period.
Ask when the fee is paid and what happens if the proposed driver cannot be accepted or the booking changes. Obtain the relevant change terms instead of assuming an automatic refund or transfer. Save the receipt and the updated agreement so you can check the payment and driver details separately.
Check the names before departure
Ask staff to show where each approved driver is recorded and which parts of the agreement each must sign. Read the actual terms and resolve spelling or identity differences before leaving. Do not treat a verbal suggestion that the second person can drive as a substitute for the required record.
Keep a copy of the completed agreement available during the outing. If a later amendment is made, retain the updated version and ask when it takes effect. Make sure the record concerns the car and dates you will actually use.
Three different questions to resolve
Eligibility: Does the proposed person satisfy the current driver requirements?
Insurance: What does the applicable policy say about that person driving this rental?
Agreement: Has LVC completed the required approval and recorded the person for this booking?
Each question has a different purpose. Paying the fee does not answer all three. If a response changes the car, dates, or insurance arrangement, ask which parts need to be reviewed again.
Plan how you will share the driving
Once both drivers have completed the required steps, ask for a walkthrough that addresses both people's questions. Adjust seating and mirrors before driving and identify the controls you need for ordinary use. Do not assume the second person received the same explanation just because they were nearby.
Decide on lawful, permitted places to change drivers. Keep the switch out of traffic and leave enough time to get situated. The route and return deadline remain the same when a different approved person takes the wheel.
Make sure both drivers know the rental restrictions
Review the destination information and confirm the specific permitted drive with LVC. A second driver does not create permission for a new detour or special use. Both people should know the agreed fuel, parking, and return instructions.
If the outing includes a celebration, separate driving from drinking plans. LVC's FAQ describes restrictions involving intoxication and unsafe driving. Do not build the schedule around switching to a person who has not been approved or is not fit to drive.
Agree who will handle the return
Agree who will keep the rental records accessible, contact LVC if plans change, and handle the return arrangements the office has accepted. That is a practical division of tasks, not a change to anyone's contractual responsibility. Ask about any responsibility you do not understand before departure.
If the second-driver plan changes after pickup
Contact LVC before another person starts driving. Ask whether the change can be made, whether attendance is required, and what insurance or agreement review is needed. Do not assume approval is automatic because there is time left in the rental.
If an approved driver becomes unavailable, keep the plan within the permissions that remain valid. Ask LVC about the return if the original arrangement no longer works. A family member or friend arriving to help should not take over without the relevant approval.
Save the revised agreement and instructions
When a change is accepted, save the written instructions and revised rental record. Confirm which person may drive, from what point, and under which booking details. Keep fee changes separate from the driver record so both are clear.
If the office cannot add the person, revise the outing and return arrangements with LVC. Do not share the keys informally. Asking about the second driver before booking gives you time to resolve missing documents and adjust the plan.
How to handle a second driver who is arriving later
Suppose you plan to collect the car in the morning, but your companion cannot reach the office until later. This is a planning example, not a description of an arrangement LVC offers. Explain the situation before booking and ask whether there is a permitted process for adding the companion.
If LVC can consider the request, confirm the location, attendance requirements, original documents, insurance review, fee, and agreement amendment. Ask when the person would become authorized to drive. A message saying that the office can review the request later is not the same as completed approval.
If the request cannot be completed
Keep the companion as a passenger and ask LVC how the original booking can proceed. If sharing the drive is central to your plans, discuss the available booking-change options before making a decision. Do not assume that an incomplete additional-driver request creates a refund or cancellation exception.
Use the same approach if someone loses a required document or cannot attend. Tell the office what changed, ask which options are available, and save the response with the reservation. The plan should reflect the people who are approved to drive, not the people who originally hoped to drive.
Frequently asked questions
Is my spouse automatically allowed to drive the rental?
Do not assume that. Tell LVC that your spouse wants to drive and ask how the person must be approved and recorded. Confirm insurance separately. A spouse rule from another rental company or loyalty program does not establish LVC's process.
Does the second driver have to be present when the car is collected?
Ask LVC about attendance for your booking before arranging pickup. Confirm which originals must be shown and whether any advance document review is possible. Sending a license copy does not establish permission to skip an in-person step.
Can I add someone after the rental has already started?
Ask LVC before that person drives. Confirm whether the addition is possible and which attendance, insurance, fee, and agreement steps apply. Retain the updated record if approved. Do not assume another company's mid-rental process applies.
Can a friend with liability-only insurance drive my exotic rental?
Ask the applicable insurer what coverage applies while that friend drives the exact car, then ask LVC whether the evidence meets its requirements. Liability and damage to the rented vehicle are separate questions. A license or additional-driver fee does not establish adequate insurance.
Can the additional driver collect or return the car without the primary renter?
Confirm collection and return separately with LVC. Ask who must attend, which card and documents are needed, and who may complete each handoff. Being approved to drive does not by itself establish permission to collect a reservation in another person's name.
Confirm each driver with LVC
Tell the office who wants to drive and ask about documents, attendance, insurance evidence, fees, and the agreement steps for your selected vehicle.
General preparation information only. Confirm current driver, payment, and agreement requirements with LVC and coverage with the applicable insurer. This article does not authorize a driver or establish insurance coverage.
