5 Steps to Take If You Meet with an Accident in a Rental Car

March 8, 2021 by Nick

People deal with road accidents daily, but being in a rented car during an accident might result in a few added layers due to the agreement policy.

Factors that result in an increased risk of collision may include the road shape, adverse weather conditions, or harsh driving skills. These may result in property damage and physical injuries to self and others involved:

Here are 5 steps you should take in case you end up in an accident in a rental car:

1.      Ensure everyone’s safety

The first thing you must do after encountering a road accident is to check if you and the passengers within your vehicle and in your surrounding are safe; if not, immediately call 911 and see if you can manage to move the car to the side of the road.

1.      Exchange of contact details

An-ambulance

If law enforcement isn’t on the scene, exchange information with the other parties involved, such as name, address, phone number, insurance company and policy number, license plate, and vehicle registration.

Avoid any hostile interactions when engaging with other parties, and don’t sign any statements that may bond you to receive or pay for damages or deductibles.

2.      Record the accident

It’s good to take pictures or videos to record the accident. Cover all angles of your vehicle and the other motor vehicles involved. In addition to this, make a note of the collision’s exact location; this includes the street name on which the accident occurred.

3.      Contact your car rental agency

You should also call the car rental company using their emergency number listed on the agreement to inform them regarding the accident. The company will then advise you on how to proceed as per their procedural requirements. You must pay deductibles to the rental company to get their vehicle repaired; this amount may later be reimbursed depending on your primary insurance and secondary coverage. If you rent a car often, it may be good practice to purchase a rental car insurance

4.      Contact your insurance company

You may also need to inform your insurance company regarding the rental car accident if you need them to serve as your primary coverage source. In case you have purchased additional insurance from the rental, inform your insurance company regarding the same. If your policy is inclusive of collision and comprehensive coverage, it will extend onto your rental as well.

Your license could be suspended if you drive without insurance in the United States.
